Crave – “to have an intense desire for”

What would happen if you and I craved the things of God the way we longed for pleasure and comfort.

What if we hungered for righteousness more and worried

less about what others thought of us?

What if what God thought of us was of greater value that what

others thought of us?

What if we were wholly us and yet completely in love with the creator of the world?

In recent years I have begun to ask God to give me a theme for the year- a phrase, a word, something for me to focus on for the next 12 months. Resolutions have never worked well for me. This year it was “no excuses- no regrets” . Regretfully- I have regrets and I have made more than my share of excuses. However, I am still journeying through the year with those words in mind. But, what if I added the word “crave” to my focus?

Recently I watched “The Way Back”,  a movie based on the true story of a group of men who escaped from a Siberian gulag towards freedom. The choices they made and the sacrifice and determination required to survive a journey on foot of over 4,500 miles was astounding. They craved freedom. They craved it more than what it might cost them.

What if you and I craved God and his will for our life more than what it might cost us?

Might it change us and the world?

My devotional for today focused on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. There is a time for everything. A time to live, die, laugh, weep, sing and dance. A time to scatter and gather….seasons. There is a cadence to these words. A rhythm . Perhaps it is the harmonies etched into the memory bank of my mind where I hear the exquisite harmony and perfect blend in song of these words set to music . A time to plant and uproot. A time to search and to give up.a time to be silent and to speak.

My eyes fill and my throat tightens unexpectedly as I again consider the words of this long ago scribe.

Lord, what season am I in? Did I miss the season of dance? Why do I wrestle with my emotions and how is it I have read this verse many times before and they were only words? What is different today? I am caught off guard.

I have questions of you God. I long for life to be the fantasy of one who has not yet been jaded by the reality of living in a fallen world. I see hurt, pain and struggle. I am sometimes angry and afraid and it is hard to trust. I know you are good God- I know I am weak and a mess.

I choose to fix my eyes on you and release my longing to understand the ebb and flow of the season and the days. I ask you Lord for grace to give this to you….. even for this moment.

a time for everything. a season.
Lord, that I would not remain a moment longer than you desire in any season.. even if I sometimes have to dance IN the darkness.

and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,

What if – we lived without regret?

What if – we laughed hard everyday?

What if- we spent time doing what we loved?

What if- we did what we loved with our time?

What if- we loved with abandon?

What if- we stared fear in the face and won?

What if- we treated ourselves as though we mattered?

What if- we gave back more than we were given?

What if- we had the chance to do life over again?

What if – we were given twenty-four hours to embrace the “What If” .. like a winner takes all?

What if- the next sunrise to sunset changed everything?

What if?

The Only Way you Lose Is If You Quit



How many times have you started a task, had a goal or a dream only to have it put on a shelf, dissolve before you or slip through your fingers seemingly before you had a chance to make it happen?

But if you quit, if you stop if you never try again- you have failed for certain.

If you pick up the pieces of the dream, dust off the goal or rethink the task at hand you have another chance for success.

Don’t quit. Don’t ever stop. Don’t give up. Ever.

God’s mercies are new every morning- HIS faithfulness is great!
